Romanian wines go back all the way to the ancient Dacian Kingdom and became among the best in Europe in the 19th century when they were supplied to royal figures like Queen Victoria or Tzar Nicholas. Sadly, the communists took over after WW2 and favored mass production, wiping out the prestige and quality of local wines. After 1989, the wine industry went through a mass restoration phase, partially reclaiming its lost identity. Your private guide will pick you up from Bucharest and drive you to Dealu Mare wine region. Stretching alongside the 45th parallel, the region has the ideal climate, especially for red grapes such as the famous local variety called “Feteasca Neagra”. The first stop is at Conacul Bellu, a wine museum inside an 18th century Wallachian mansion. Next are Lacerta and 1000 Chipuri, award winning boutique wineries where you will have private tours of the facilities, enjoy great scenery and taste a total of 12 wines alongside plates of cheese and charcuterie.

Stop 1 (Conacul Bellu)
Description: Built by Baron Alexander Bellu in the 18th century, this small mansion is a great example of old Wallachian (southern Romanian) architecture and offers a unique art collection, blending European and Ottoman styles. With a great passion for wine and even owning a sparkling wine factory, the baron collected and stored some very old wine making tools in the mansion’s cellar, with some items going back even to the 3rd century.

Stop 2 (Lacerta Winery)
Description: Lacerta is one of the most modern wineries in Romania, with production techniques based on gravitational principles meant to limit the usage of pumps and their wines have a rich, complex and silken taste. The local staff will take you on a private tour of the complex after which you’ll be able to taste 6 of the 12 varieties, from local Feteasca to more foreign grapes like Blaufränkisch, all in a splendid tasting area with great views over the surrounding hills.

Stop 3 (1000 Chipuri Winery)
Description: This is a family owned boutique winery located on the grounds of Casa Colinelor Guesthouse. Here, you have the option of serving lunch before enjoying the 2nd wine tasting session of the day, also consisting of 6 glasses of wine. The tour also includes a bit of sampling directly from the oak barrels or the stainless steel tanks, which offers even more insight into the process of winemaking and a comparison between fresh and aged wines.
